Newbies

This fall has been filled with all things new.  Subsequently, I have been inexcusably missing in action and long overdue a post. Alas, I think it is only appropriate to share a couple of my favorite newbies:

#1: This little gem arrived in the mail a few days ago from my darling (and for sure coolest) relative, "cousin" Diana. Note: the card reads "I saw this tape dispenser and wanted your red stapler to have a fashionable friend. It made me laugh." Thank you Diana! It's so quirky. The RSP and I love it.

#2: My first garden. Day 3 and they are still alive! *Phew

Getting out the vote -- By RSP Guest Blogger, Jaclyn

We are thrilled to welcome our third! guest blogger to the RSP. RSP meet Jaclyn.

Jaclyn, a dear friend, is a rising voice in public policy, never shy to sport a preppy edge, and an expert on the hand-written note and all things Law and Order. In her RSP debut, Jaclyn reminds us She-Office Ninjas that today is not just another Thursday.......

Getting out the Vote -- By RSP Guest Blogger, Jaclyn

Today is a celebration for all women. August 26th marks the 90th anniversary of one of the most defining moments for women in the United States – the 19th amendment to the United States Constitution was passed into law guaranteeing all American women the right to vote. The leading ladies of the general women’s right movement, Susan B Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Margaret Sanger amongst many others deserve the gratitude of the 150 + million women in the United States that now enjoy the freedoms these women advocated so bravely for. Their poise, smarts and success have led to the tremendous progress that we now see 90 years after the amendment’s ratification.

Nowhere has this progress been more visible than in the workplace. These past nine decades have seen an influx of women into the workplace (which is now nearly equal to men), women elected and appointed to state and federal offices, a large and growing effort to equalize pay (re: President Obama’s signing of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act) and a higher percentage of women voting than men. Thus, the fearless ladies’ of the women’s right movement sacrifices have not gone in vain.

As a woman who has worked in two traditionally male dominated industries’, the importance of today does not go unnoticed. I have learned from and try to incorporate the strength of Rosie the Riveter, the brevity of Susan B Anthony and the sophistication of Elizabeth Cady Stanton into my she-office ninja persona.

However, for all women, today is a day of thanks and credit to the 19th amendment for the lasting changes it has had for women since its inception. And the best thanks we could offer to those that struggled before us, is to use the right we were gifted nine decades back and vote during this coming election (sorry shameless plug).

Shameless Promos

The RSP has totally geeked itself out lately and has gotten really into website building/design. Alas, its first non-RSP site launched today. The site? www.MeredithMcBrearty.com - showcasing the interior design portfolio and talent of savvy entrepreneur and dear friend of the RSP, Meredith McBrearty. Let's just say that the RSP is BEAMing with pride both for McBrearty and our own technological accomplishments (selfish).

Go on. Give in. Redecorate your home, office, you name it with a personalized, timeless interior a la McBrearty. She works all over the place folks - Washington D.C., Miami, New York, Texas, etc. Get involved.

A few of the RSP's favorite images of McBrearty's:

Evie Mania: Update on Wall Street Turns Professional Athlete

Its official. The dear friend of the RSP, Evelyn Stevens, is out of control. She just keeps winning. Deservedly so, Evie Mania has struck. Note: The RSP recognizes that it is sad that it took a full page article in this month's Vogue to prompt this post (The RSP has already bought 10 copies.....page 150 folks.....we suggest you do the same!) but cough it up as an example of our ignorance re: the sport of cycling.

In order to do our part to spread the word about this incredible female individual, the RSP has collected the following media images detailing the highlights of her success since trading in her business suit for spandex.

July 2009: Winner of the Fitchburg Classic in Massachusetts

July 2009: Winner of the Cascade Classic in Bend, Oregon

August 2009: Won a stage and placed second overall in the Route de France (read: Female version of the Tour de France)

September 2009: Placed 15th in her first World Championship in Mendrisio, Switzerland

March 2010: Won the final stage at the Redlands Classic in Southern California

Redlands | Stage 3 Finish | Evelyn Stevens from Tim Schamber on Vimeo.

June 2010: Won the US National Time Trial Finals in Oregon

July 2010: She won the 7th stage of the Gino Donne in Italy

It's Evie Mania people. Shamone. Get on board and route on Evie at Worlds in Australia in August! For more info on Evie's story from Wall Street to a Professional athlete, see the RSP's visit with Stevens from March 2010.

Summer Friday Getaway #3: Austin, TX

Moving west in our RSP Summer Friday Getaway series, the next stop is a place that will always be very near and dear to the RSP's heart---Austin, Texas.  Nestled on the Hill Country border, Austin is the capital of the great state of Texas and all things live music, outdoor sports, and queso.  Sporting an infectious state of mind that is relaxed, welcoming, and non-traditional, this "town" is a convenient, affordable destination for a summer weekend getaway.

Yet another mastermind of funky, yet very chic hotelier Liz Lambert, the Hotel St. Cecila (named for the patron saint of music and poetry) offers very private accommodations within Austin's South Congress District. With 5 distinct suites, 6 poolside bungalows, and three studios, the Hotel St. Cecila approaches each room with an artistic lens and distinct point of view. The Hotel is the perfect spot to champion an Austin state of mind. http://www.hotelsaintcecilia.com/

One could spend years eating his or her way through Austin without getting bored. Alas, the RSP has done its best to pick the must sees for a summer weekend getaway:

* Ski Shores: Hop in your boat (fingers crossed you can snag one while in town) and zip up Lake Austin (past 360) on your skis or wakeboard to Ski Shores for a cold beer and some burgers. Park your boat out in front, eat, and then be on your merry way. http://www.skishoresaustin.com/

* Home Slice: New York Pizza--Austin Style--this So-Co neighborhood spot is a must.  http://www.homeslicepizza.com/

* Musashino Sushi: Don't be turned off by the fact that its building facade says "Chinatown" (and not "Musashino") or that you have to take a longer than normal grub-distance journey up Mopac to get there, this is a gem of a sushi spot. Start with the Avacado Kama and then load up on the maki rolls (Texas Road Kill and Spicy Lobster Tempura Rolls) and you are good to go. They even have the warm cloths to greet you as you sit down. Love! http://www.musashinosushi.com/

* Maudies: The line in front will affirm that this ordinary looking Tex Mex spot is nothing of the sorts. Bring a hungry stomach and start with the Diablo Sol Food.  http://www.maudies.com/

* Lamberts Downtown Barbecue: Gourmet BBQ with a Texas twist, Lamberts is a great spot to take a break from the ever present Austin Tex-Mex scene. Check out the Green Chili Cheese Grits and Maple Brioche Bread Pudding. Ask for the bar menu to see even more (often more affordable) options. http://lambertsaustin.com

* Uchi: This upscale sushi restaurant will leave you shocked that you are in Texas. Some of the freshest and most cleverly crafted sushi dishes that the RSP has ever seen, Uchi is well worth the often hour plus wait. http://www.uchiaustin.com/

Like I said above, Austin is the capital of all things live music and the outdoors. To get involved:

* Go Stand Up Paddle Boarding on Lake Austin: http://www.supatx.com/

* Live Music: Check out the set lists at Emos (http://www.emosaustin.com/), Stubb's (http://www.stubbsaustin.com/), Antone's (http://www.antones.net/) and Momos (http://www.momosclub.com/) for while you are in town and catch a live show. Make sure to get tickets to Stubb's Sunday Gospel Brunch.

* Walk down South Congress: Spend the afternoon checking out all the local shops, stream line trailers, and restaurants.

* Run/Bike/Walk Town Lake: The RSP's happy place for all things running, Town Lake is truly a special spot for such a large city. Equip with water coolers compliments of local running store RunTex, Town Lake sports a variety of distances for all types of workouts: http://www.runtex.com/townlake_2006.pdf. Too hot? Cool off at Barton Springs mid-run. Also check out the Barton Creek Greenbelt for other running and hiking routes: http://www.texasoutside.com/bartongreenbelt.htm

* Lake Austin Spa: Rated the #1 Destination Spa for 2010 by Conde Nast, The Lake Austin Spa is the perfect place to de-stress and restore your well being. While a touch pricey, it is worth every penny. http://www.lakeaustin.com/

Closet Confidential

Meet the RSP's other sister and dear friend Alex. Alex—a firecracker from Pennsylvania with a love for ballet flats and all things French Provence—has mastered something very near and dear to every female's heart, the closet. An immaculate space organized by color and clothing item, Alex's closet is both an NYC institution and tourist attraction (see above photo):

Women seeking nuggets of closet organization inspiration, please find some pearls of Alex's wisdom below that the RSP has picked up over the years:

  • Invest in a set of uniform, all white hangers. Ditch the dingy Dry Cleaner wire ones. Check out the Container Store or Bed Bath and Beyond.

  • Edit your closet frequently. If you don't wear it, donate it to Goodwill.

  • Sort clothing by item. Then by color.

  • Keep shoes stacked in their original boxes.

  • All sweaters should be buttoned, folded, and stacked, with the bulkiest sweaters being placed on the bottoms. If you want to be super intense, invest in a folding tool used by retail stores.

RSP Guest Blogger: Beauty Bliss for Workaholics

Beauty Bliss for Workaholics
By Lindsey R. Senior Brand Strategist and sister of RSP Founder

New York's neighborhood mani pedi joints and high end spas tend to operate between the hours of 10am and 8pm.  So what's a gal to do when she regularly punches the clock at 9am and 10pm?  Certainly not try to invest in at-home procedures.  Waxing your own eyebrows?  Painting your own nails?  If you're able to make that look well done then you're a better woman than I.  No, my friends.  The answer is 24 Hour Hair Party.  This Korea-based chain has a Flatiron location that provides manis, pedis, waxing and yes friends, massages, round the clock.  Don't have an appointment?  No sweat!  Walk ins welcome.  And the quality is superb.  Even Olivia Palermo is a fan.  See ya there and enjoy!

RSP iPhone Apps-olutes

So Apple came out with the iPhone 4 yesterday and the RSP is having major phone envy. Compared to its 3G and 1G relatives, the iPhone 4 is faster, more powerful, and easier to use. Some highlights of its new features are its two cameras for video chatting, a sharper retina display, and a screen made of this crazy glass material that is more durable, clear, and scratch resistant. *Sigh. A proponent of not switching to newer tech-models until absolutely necessary, I guess I am stuck with my trusty 3G until it suffers a life terminating drop or falls into the toilet or something.

Alas, the RSP has decided to share what it loves most about its still worthy 3G iPhone with you -- Apps. Below, check-out the RSP's Apps-olutes for any iPhone...be it 1G,3G,or iPhone 4. Click on each icon for point of purchase. Enjoy!

RSP Blog Roll. Lifework by Herman Miller

The blogging brainchild of office furniture designer Herman Miller, Lifework is the ultimate catch-all site for office inspiration. From random office doo-dads that you don't really need but absolutely must have to a closer look into all things office from some of the world's most talented design minds, Lifework has it all. The site even has a post highlighting the ever chic red Swingline stapler (if that isn't instant street cred, I am not sure what is).

The following layout is a potpourri of images from several of the RSP's favorite Lifework blog posts. Click on each image to be taken to the blog's post/URL. Enjoy!

Summer Friday Getaway #2: Seaside, Florida

The following post is dedicated to loyal RSP fans and Queens of the Beach: Leslie, Lindsey, Patti, Lauren O., Meredith, and Felicia.

For all you Southerners out there, Seaside is the perfect summer destination to beat the heat and get away. Located on the Florida panhandle along the scenic Highway 30A, Seaside has the white-est of white sand beaches, architecturally recognized cottages, and a community that champions a step back in time. With Southwest airlines now flying into Panama City Beach Airport (opens late May!), this gem of a location is now both easily accessible by car and plane.

The following post pays tributes to the RSP favs from this summer hot spot, suggests what to wear, what to bring, and where to go:

What to Wear: Seaside is the epitome of beach casual. Grab your understated beach tote, sandals, wide brim hat, shades, tunic/cover-up, and suit (pack a one piece to avoid those awkward work colleague run-ins sporting that bikini of yours) and you are ready to go.

What to Bring: Your latest beach read, towel, cash to get a Cabana Man set-up, Words with Friends Iphone App, beach gear (frisbee, bocce ball set, mini-football---bonus points for SEC related), best Key-lime pie recipe, and your tennis whites.

Where to Go:

  • Barefoot Beach Barbeque: Great Southern eats. They'll deliver BBQ to you on the beach!
  • The Beach: Call Cabana Man and get a beach set-up from 9-5.
  • Modica Market: Wonderful market with local produce and goods.
  • Sundog Books: The best place that you will ever find to find a Southern fiction read.
  • Shops at Seaside: Shop for killer antiques, Southern home goods, and beach wear while strolling through town.
  • Bud and Alleys: Great restaurant and upstairs bar overlooking the beach. Go there to grab a cold drink and grouper and grits.

Summer Friday Getaway #1: The Hamptons

The following post is dedicated to loyal RSP fans and Queens of the Beach: Leslie, Lindsey, Alison, Lauren, Evelyn, and Megan.

Memorial Day is right around the corner and the RSP is getting antsy for summer. Real antsy. To harness our excitement, the RSP has decided to kick off the first of its Summer Friday Getaway Destinations by profiling the Hamptons. The following post pays tributes to the RSP favs from this summer hot spot, suggests what to wear, what to bring, and where to go:

What to Wear: Grab your beach tote, sandals (we chose neon as we are loving neon this season and there is no appropriate neon office gear), shades, tunic/cover-up, and suit (pack a one piece to avoid those awkward work colleague run-ins sporting that bikini of yours) and you are ready to go.

What to Bring: Your latest beach read, towel, cash to park, and a shiny new beach cruiser (the RSP all time favorite mode of beach transport...especially when equipped with a basket and ipod speakers blaring beach tunes).

Where to Go:

  • Cooper's Beach: An RSP fav for its bathrooms, parking access, and snack bar.
  • Clam Bar: To die popcorn shrimp and veggie burger.
  • Amagansett Farmers Market: Amazing fresh vegetables and baked goods. Definitely try the scones.
  • Shopping in Southampton: Check out great stores like Roberta Roller Rabbit, DVF, JCrew Beach, Alice + Olivia, Ralph Lauren, and Theory.
  • Tate's Bake Shop: Perhaps the most yummy chocolate chip cookies of all time. The RSP likes to think that because they are such thin cookies that they are calorically harmless
  • B Smith's in Sag Harbor: The best view for a meal in the Hamptons.

(Not to worry non-East Coast She-Office Ninjas, destinations with a closer proximity to you will be coming soon.) Enjoy!

RSP Commute Playlist

The RSP is a huge advocate for starting the day off right with some tunes. The 2008 Romantic Comedy  Definitely, Maybe (albeit cheesy, but the RSP doesn't descriminate when it comes to Rom Coms) perfectly captures how that one perfect song can set an infectious uplifting mood to take on the day's labors.

(click the frame below to see Ryan Reynolds stroll down Park Avenue to Sly and the Family Stone's "Everyday People")

The following are a few of RSP's favorite office commute tracks (and suggested dance moves to spice things up). Click on each album cover to download and start kicking off your day with an extra skip to your step.

Track #1:"Jump" by the Pointer Sisters

Track #2: "Walking on a Dream" by Empire of the Sun

Track #3:"Invisible Touch" by Genesis

Track #4: "Bulletproof" by La Roux

Track #6: "Sweet Disposition" by The Temper Trap

Dream Offices

Unfortunately our office decor is often out of our control. Example given: Never in a million years would I have selected the items chosen to decorate the office of my first job as an investment banking analyst–engulfing aluminum cubicle partitions surrounded by blank walls lined with moving boxes, old 10Ks, and pitch books. Or, during my days on the trading floor, my top furniture choice was a far cry from one extra long desk to share with 19 other people.

For all of you out there day dreaming about decorating your own personal office to the MAX on your terms (hello! Kelly Wearstler wallpaper, natural sunlight, and fresh cut flowers delivered daily from Flowers on Lexington), the following are some nuggets of inspiration so that when the big day comes we are ready:

Wall Street turns Professional Athlete

Meet Evelyn “EvieStevens: A Firecracker from Acton, Mass, Stevens is a Wall Street Banker turned Professional Cyclist.   After a four year stint as one of Wall Street’s top young performers, Stevens traded in her suits and high heels (well mostly J. Crew flats) for spandex and the opportunity to compete in the 2009 World Championships for the USA.  Here’s the twist:  A college tennis player and consummate runner, Stevens has always been a naturally phenomenal athlete; however, she didn’t start cycling until her days on Wall Street.  In a world where a post-work ride on the stationary bike at Equinox will never cut it on the professional circuit, how did she do it?

RSP:  What’s your secret sauce? How did you do it (become a nationally ranked cyclist while working on Wall Street?)
Evie: Well I am not sure that I have a secret sauce, but I do have a great coach, a strong training program which I follow to the T and an intense passion for the sport and competing.

RSP:  How did you stay motivated to keep training after hard days at the office?
Evie: For me cycling was an outlet from sitting at a desk all day. Fortunately, I had a understanding roommate who allowed me to workout on my trainer in the living room when I was getting home from work too late!

RSP:  Did anyone at the office ever try to discourage your cycling?
Evie:  No, my office was pretty encouraging of my cycling, especially as it became more evident that I was serious about pursuing it.

RSP: What are your favorite songs to pump you up?
Evie: I love country and pop music to pump me up

RSP:  Any advice for us still trying to be female corporate office ninjas?
Evie: I think it is always great to squeeze a little bit of something you love or feel passionate about into your day. I realize this is tough when you are working a lot, but sometimes it makes the tougher days a little better and the great days even greater.

RSP Meets the Oracle

Last week the Red Stapler Project was blessed with the pleasure of traveling to Omaha, NE and visiting with the Oracle himself---first over an open Q&A session and then over a root beer float and chicken parm at Piccolo Pete's, Buffett's go to Nebraska eats.  While the RSP traveled to the occasion by plane, Mr. Buffett pulled up in his 2006 symbolic support of GM, his metallic gold Cadillac coated with salt and dirt from the Nebraska wintry roads.  Grasping a Cherry Coca Cola in hand, Buffett was sporting his trademark thick brown tortoise shell glasses, suspenders, flushed rosy cheeks, a custom blue pin striped suit, a silk red tie, and a great attitude.  He immediately puts the room at ease with a joke. A hammy one. And one of many welcomed nuggets of humor that ensued over the course of the afternoon in conjunction with his enchantingly kind demeanor and frugal perspective.

Buffett was full of thoughts and advice ranging from living life to the fullest to investing in Emerging Markets. The following is a random sampling and peek into the mind of one of the most successful investors in the world:

Buffet on…

…Starting younger: “If I could change anything I would have started younger.  I didn’t buy my first stock till I was 11.”

…Marriage: “If you want a marriage that will last, look for someone with low expectations.”

…The inner scorecard: “Would you rather be the world’s greatest lover who is regarded as the worst, or the world’s worst lover that is regarded as the best?......Look for heroes in life. It is important to pick the right heroes." Buffett emphasized that his father's strong inner score card made him Buffett's hero in life.

…Friendship (after talking about the Holocaust): “At 60, if you’d have a lot of people who’d hide you, you’re successful.”

…Being the same as everyone else: “You and me, you go to McDonalds, I go to Dairy Queen… cause we own it. Most things we do are similar, though I travel better.” “Suits: I pay more for mine, but they look cheap when they are on.”

…Cherry Coke: “Cherry Coke has saved my life.  I drink 5 a day, at 150 calories that’s 750 calories a day.  If I didn’t have that, I’d lose a pound a week.”

…Projections: “I don’t make up projections because then people try to make me look good and make up numbers to meet them.”

…Success: “Success is getting what you want, happiness is wanting what you get.”

...Investing in management teams: “Look to see if they love the business or love the money. The number one question that you should ask future employees or management teams is if they are passionate about the business? In the end, buy a business because you feel so good about it because sooner or later an idiot will run it and you will need it to do well regardless.”

...Picking a career: "You should be doing something that causes you to tap dance to work everyday." Buffett equates his career to getting to "paint my own painting that will never be finished…no one says to me that I should do this or that…if they do, I will tell them to take the brush and what to do with it."

Of course the RSP couldn't leave without equipping Mr. Buffett with his own piece of office flair, a shiny new red Swingline stapler. Hopefully that little guy is now living on Buffett's desk and being put to good use as Mr. Buffett staples away in anticipation of his annual Shareholders meeting on May 1, 2010. Hey, a girl can dream!

Real Housewives on Wall Street?

The RSP loves! Bravo’s The Real Housewives of New York City.  Among the loud personalities of Jill Zarin (fav!), Bethenny, Ramona, Alex, Kelly and Countess de Lesseps, there is an absent representation for a women who shares the same New York City playground as these fancy females—the Wall Street Housewife.  The RSP has taken it upon itself to provide a glam Wall Street Housewife mock-up in case the powers that be elect to debut her to the Bravo viewership.

Enter our Wall Street Housewife.  An Ivy League grad turned investment banker, she is an SVP and always looks flawless in a custom made suit, killer designer pumps and the latest Birkin.  She has two adorable children who maintain a strict Crew Cuts and Ralph Lauren Children uniform and attend a top New England prep school.  She never misses an important school event for her children and is actively involved in the school’s board.  Her husband (dashingly handsome and clad with an endless supply of Hermes, Ferragamo, and Kiton ties) makes more money than her and is a pillar of perfection opposite her in the family’s annual Christmas card.  After getting her kiddos fed, prepped and ready for school, she gets picked up from her beautiful garden estate in a black Town car before arriving at the office with a fresh Starbucks latte waiting on her desk, compliments of the new intern.  After doing some work, she goes to Equinox for a relaxing Vinyasa yoga class before returning back to work to tie up some loose ends.  After having the town car stop at Whole Foods en route home, she fixes a wonderful meal for her family of four.  Next day: repeat.

Sorry: That was mean.  Perhaps it is better to just acknowledge the harsh reality that glamour is absent from the world of the Wall Street Housewife and it is more about the fulfillment from being able to do it all and make it work?  While maybe there is not a viable market for this type of personality on the television circuit because A) Spreadsheets and M&A deals are boring B) It would be too stressful to watch as an entertainment medium and C) The likes of the major banks would have a fit having a television crew in the office, the Wall Street Housewife is nonetheless still a champion among her family and Wall Street peers and should be celebrated as a heroine in the real, world of reality.
