Wall Street turns Professional Athlete
Thursday, March 18, 2010 at 12:13PM
Meet Evelyn “Evie” Stevens: A Firecracker from Acton, Mass, Stevens is a Wall Street Banker turned Professional Cyclist. After a four year stint as one of Wall Street’s top young performers, Stevens traded in her suits and high heels (well mostly J. Crew flats) for spandex and the opportunity to compete in the 2009 World Championships for the USA. Here’s the twist: A college tennis player and consummate runner, Stevens has always been a naturally phenomenal athlete; however, she didn’t start cycling until her days on Wall Street. In a world where a post-work ride on the stationary bike at Equinox will never cut it on the professional circuit, how did she do it?
RSP: What’s your secret sauce? How did you do it (become a nationally ranked cyclist while working on Wall Street?)
RSP: What’s your secret sauce? How did you do it (become a nationally ranked cyclist while working on Wall Street?)
Evie: Well I am not sure that I have a secret sauce, but I do have a great coach, a strong training program which I follow to the T and an intense passion for the sport and competing.
RSP: How did you stay motivated to keep training after hard days at the office?
Evie: For me cycling was an outlet from sitting at a desk all day. Fortunately, I had a understanding roommate who allowed me to workout on my trainer in the living room when I was getting home from work too late! RSP: Did anyone at the office ever try to discourage your cycling?
Evie: No, my office was pretty encouraging of my cycling, especially as it became more evident that I was serious about pursuing it.
RSP: What are your favorite songs to pump you up?
Evie: I love country and pop music to pump me up
RSP: Any advice for us still trying to be female corporate office ninjas?
Evie: I think it is always great to squeeze a little bit of something you love or feel passionate about into your day. I realize this is tough when you are working a lot, but sometimes it makes the tougher days a little better and the great days even greater.
