Closet Confidential
Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 09:35AM
Meet the RSP's other sister and dear friend Alex. Alex—a firecracker from Pennsylvania with a love for ballet flats and all things French Provence—has mastered something very near and dear to every female's heart, the closet. An immaculate space organized by color and clothing item, Alex's closet is both an NYC institution and tourist attraction (see above photo):
Women seeking nuggets of closet organization inspiration, please find some pearls of Alex's wisdom below that the RSP has picked up over the years:
- Invest in a set of uniform, all white hangers. Ditch the dingy Dry Cleaner wire ones. Check out the Container Store or Bed Bath and Beyond.
- Edit your closet frequently. If you don't wear it, donate it to Goodwill.
- Sort clothing by item. Then by color.
- Keep shoes stacked in their original boxes.
- All sweaters should be buttoned, folded, and stacked, with the bulkiest sweaters being placed on the bottoms. If you want to be super intense, invest in a folding tool used by retail stores.

Love it! And how easy it is to find things when your closet is in an array of ordered color....it's a tribute to Ellsworth Kelly's Spectrum V at The Met. How aesthetically pleasing. :) http://mysite.pratt.edu/~edeboer/spectrum.html
I LOVE Alex's closet!!!!!
Oh- I'm embarassed but where could I find a folding tool? Container Store? I am crazy anal about my closet! And like the above posts, I don't know Alex, but love her!

Also:
From A herself: "If you can't find a folding board I suggest buying a children's book like Eloise or Madeline, which are comparable in size to a folding board. They will work wonders for sweater folding, and of course childhood favorites are always fun to re-read too!"
Another important tip to keep in mind concerns how you store your clothes once you bring them home from the cleaners. Do not store your clothing in the plastic bags that the dry cleaner uses.
